Motor Vehicle Safety Inspections in North Carolina
Annual Safety Inspections
In North Carolina, motor vehicles must pass an annual safety inspection before they can be registered or renewed. This requirement applies to all vehicles, including motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and motor homes. However, emissions inspections are not required for motorcycles, RVs, or motor homes.
Inspection Process
Safety inspections are conducted by licensed inspection stations. The inspection process typically includes:
- Checking the vehicle's brakes, tires, lights, and steering
- Inspecting the vehicle's exhaust system and emissions control devices
- Verifying the vehicle's registration and insurance
Failure to Pass Inspection
If a vehicle fails the safety inspection, the owner must have the necessary repairs made and return the vehicle for a re-inspection. The vehicle must pass the re-inspection within 30 days of the initial inspection.
Consequences of Failing to Get an Inspection
Driving a vehicle that has not passed a safety inspection is illegal in North Carolina. Drivers who are caught driving an uninspected vehicle may be subject to fines and penalties.
