Freedom to Vote Act: Empowering Judges to Curb Partisan Gerrymandering

Landmark Legislation Tackles Redistricting Bias

Critical Safeguards for Fair Congressional Elections

In a significant development, the Freedom to Vote Act aims to rectify the issue of extreme partisan gerrymandering in congressional redistricting. Currently, federal courts lack the authority to prevent states from manipulating district boundaries for political advantage.

Addressing a Broken System

The Freedom to Vote Act proposes three key measures to fix the broken redistricting process:

  1. Strong Ban on Partisan Gerrymandering: The bill would establish a clear prohibition on drawing maps that favor one political party over another.
  2. Firm Ground for Judicial Review: Courts would be given clearer standards to reject maps that violate the ban on partisan gerrymandering.
  3. Independent Redistricting Commissions: The bill encourages the establishment of nonpartisan commissions to draw congressional districts.

These measures would empower judges to effectively scrutinize redistricting maps and prevent blatant partisan bias.

Protecting Election Integrity

On September 14, a coalition of organizations, including the Brennan Center for Justice, ACLU, and Center for American Progress, urged the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act. They emphasized its critical role in protecting our elections from voter suppression, partisan sabotage, and dark money influence.
